Strategies For Preventing Trailer Theft
Trailers are a popular target among thieves. Whether they’re interested in the trailer itself or just the cargo, they see hitching up your trailer and taking it for themselves as an easy way to make a quick buck. Luckily, there are several strategies you can employ in order to deter trailer thieves. Here is a quick rundown from the experts at White Spruce Trailer Sales Inc.
Change Your Trailer's Appearance
Thieves prefer to target unmodified trailers since they are harder to identify. A fresh coat of paint can help make your trailer less likely to be stolen. If you’d rather not go to all the trouble or expense of fully repainting your trailer, a sticker or identifying streak of paint in a unique location can be useful as well. Anything that makes your trailer more identifiable is helpful.
Storage Techniques
The most secure place to store your trailer will be somewhere out of sight and behind a locked gate. If you can’t lock your trailer away, try to at least make sure that no one can see your trailer.
Parking Techniques
If you can’t lock your trailer away or keep it out of sight, park your trailer in such a way that thieves will have a hard time stealing. Well-lit, high-traffic areas have more potential witnesses, so parking in these areas makes it less likely that your trailer will be targeted. You can also take steps to make it harder for thieves to hitch up your trailer, such as reversing it against a wall or fence or by parking something in front of it. The more effort thieves need to expend in order to steal your trailer, the more secure it will be.
Get Trailer Locks
Another great way to protect against trailer theft is by installing a trailer lock. Hitch locks are two-part locks designed to keep your trailer locked to your tow vehicle. If you don’t want to be hooked up to your tow vehicle all the time, try a wheel boot. They clamp around your trailer’s wheels and are visible enough to be a great deterrent. If you do choose to use a wheel boot, make sure that your boot fully covers the wheel lugs and can’t be sawed off or pried open.
