A Beginner’s Guide to Trailer Maintenance
Trailer maintenance helps extend the life of your trailer and improve its performance. Some tasks are best left to professionals while other trailer maintenance tasks can be tackled at home. The Tires
Just like with your car, the tires are literally where the rubber meets the road and tire failure can be very dangerous. Always pack a spare. Your tires should:
- Match your trailer’s load requirement
- Be suitable for your towing speed
- Be all the same in terms of size and type
- Have adequate tread left
- Be inflated to the correct PSI
The Deck
No matter what your cargo trailer deck is made of, you should try to keep it clean. Depending on the building materials and how often it is used, you should take the necessary precautions against what the elements can do to your trailer. If you have a wooden deck, it may need to be stained every so often to keep it protected, whereas a metal deck might need to be tended to if you notice any oxidation. Inspecting them frequently can be a big help in preventing serious problems.
Trailer Storage
Store your trailer in a dry, covered, well-ventilated area. If you put a cover on your trailer, make sure air can circulate underneath. Don’t let water pool up on a sagging cover. If you notice any rust on your trailer, remove it immediately, then apply a preventative coating such as cold galvanizing compound.
